Training
As a believer of physical fitness, Moni emphasizes how important it is for everyone to be as fit as possible. That is why his regimen in CKM comprises a grueling workout before techniques are even discussed.
"If anyone attacked you on the street, your heart rate will increase dramatically," Moni explains. "That's why we have to get your heart pumping before we start training techniques. We need to stimulate an attack scenario as realistic as possible."
By incorporating military-style drills, calisthenics, wind sprints, cardio, strength and endurance training, Commando Krav Maga students are taken to the point of near exhaustion before beginning the actual combat tactical training.
During tactical training, students are paired up to practice the given technique during class. This may comprise of knifefighting, gun-disarming techniques, vicious chokes, wild punches and many other possible scenarios. Not only do students focus on the tiny details of each technique, but Moni points out the psychological aspects of being prepared. During a gun-disarming technique, Moni points out the dangers of looking into your assailant's eyes. In doing so, you may trigger the assailant to shoot you. Each technique is practiced over and over until it becomes an instinctive part of you, almost like a reflex.
After practicing the moves a multitude of times with your partner, you switch to the next partner. This gives you a chance to work with someone bigger, smaller, slower, faster, shorter or taller. Students must be prepared for any size attacker. Students must also work on "surprise attacks," where you may be facing three or four attackers at a time. They can come from any direction and attack you with any weapon at any time.
Further reality-based components are introduced as students become more advanced in the Commando Krav Maga system. Instead of practicing with plastic guns, you practice with paintball guns that can fire live ammo. Students also will be subjected to practicing on concrete, in the park or in dark areas such as parking lots. Car-jacking and hostage scenarios will also be part of this comprehensive curriculum.
No fights are ever fair, so this may be the most valuable tool to save your life.

Moni keeps his fingers tight and one arm near his vital organs while shrinking the target size for the knife wielder (1). As the attacker lunges with the knife, Moni jumps away to one side of the attacker while controlling the knife hand (2). Moni quickly closes the gap and pulls the attacker's arm against his chest (3) while twisting the knife hand for maximum leverage (4). With the attacker off balance, Moni takes him down face first (5) and creates pressure on the attacker's wrist (6), forcing him to release the knife (7). |
